These days candles are mostly used for aesthetic or cultural reasons. We use them to set the right mood at dinner parties, celebrate important milestones and light our way when the power goes out (some of us also use them to enhance a satanic ritual from time to time). But many moons ago, as hightlighted in the Reddit post above, candles were also used to keep track of time. I love this idea of candle clocks and melting time so thought I’d propose some updated versions of my own.

Classic Football Match Candles Could we celebrate classic football matches using tall, thin candles that burn for exactly 90 minutes? Shown below is Ireland’s famous World Cup victory over Italy at USA 94 — celebrated in candle form. On the reverse side, 12 minutes into the official match candle, is the moment Ray Houghton chipped Italian keeper Gianluca Pagliuca to put Ireland ahead.

&#60;img width="270" height="1238" width_o="270" height_o="1238" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/b8579ce291a067fd80d7168350621e5809bf7cffb9d562215fb05e5686598d45/big-boyzzz.png" data-mid="186141236" border="0" data-scale="14" data-no-zoom src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/270/i/b8579ce291a067fd80d7168350621e5809bf7cffb9d562215fb05e5686598d45/big-boyzzz.png" /&#62;Offical Ireland v Italy World Cup 94 match candle

Flight Tracking Candles Or for the plane spotters and aviation enthusiasts among us (aka my dad), what if popular flight routes were available on candle? Like a kind of waxy flight simulator, these candles would make the world your oyster. All you have to do is buckle into your favourite armchair at home, pop your phone on airplane mode and melt your way to a range of destinations. &#38;nbsp;

Listening CandlesTo help savour a favourite album, what if we made listening candles? Light the wick, hit play on your music, and follow along as you burn through the album’s track listing.&#60;img width="600" height="1350" width_o="600" height_o="1350" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/333884a99c6a31c145c6829965e6d0a767dbaf607a6b7d98ff1c7bfde3104ee8/timemusic.png" data-mid="186143847" border="0" data-scale="24" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/600/i/333884a99c6a31c145c6829965e6d0a767dbaf607a6b7d98ff1c7bfde3104ee8/timemusic.png" /&#62;John Martyn’s Solid Air - now available on wax (ba-dum-tshhh)

24 Hour Birthday CandleOn your birthday, instead of blowing out an ever increasing quantity of small candles, what if you had one giant birthday candle that burned for the full 24 hours of your big day?&#38;nbsp;
&#60;img width="1080" height="920" width_o="1080" height_o="920" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/475280e5a50df21bf212222a03a491b157ce16337ddeb23896a55284f511c19a/bday-candle.png" data-mid="186143647" border="0"  src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/475280e5a50df21bf212222a03a491b157ce16337ddeb23896a55284f511c19a/bday-candle.png" /&#62;
The ultimate 24 hour candle

Other candle related ideas I played with:
An offical Dr. Oetker candle —&#38;nbsp;A candle that lasts 18 mins long and times your pizza cooking in the oven. Delicous, useless.
The Wire Box Set Candles — Each season of The Wire has approx 12 episodes, lasting an hour each. We would make 5 candles, one for each of the 5 seasons that burn for approx 12 hours. To make the show more immersive each candle would be scented to smell like the setting of each season (e.g. Season 2 is set at the docks).Home Time — A candle that burns for 9 hours - a standard working day (including lunch). Light it at 9am when you start and go home when it extinguishes. To help you out the door, the final 10 mins of the candle could be scented to smell like raw sewage.Feel free to send me any of your ideas too

Last year car maker BMW showcased a new technology that enables drivers to instantly change the colour and surface design of their car.&#38;nbsp;It’s an impressive innovation to be fair but I can’t help feeling it’s also a little meh — kind of like go faster stripes that move. If I was working over at BMW HQ I’d love to see the tech used in more considered ways…
🚗

	 Like what if the car surface could sync with Spotify and display the artwork of
the music you’re listening to?
	&#60;img width="640" height="474" width_o="640" height_o="474" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/024afbdb17073e92c6ebac39648e0236c765cc6a6901947ee190db3e790c3e67/car-skin-music.gif" data-mid="209918454" border="0"  src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/640/i/024afbdb17073e92c6ebac39648e0236c765cc6a6901947ee190db3e790c3e67/car-skin-music.gif" /&#62;

	Or maybe the technology could help professional drivers switch easily from being on duty to off duty?
	&#60;img width="640" height="474" width_o="640" height_o="474" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/4d812a65894a6277019aad2f283edb3e0187f07dacd1ce5a45186df69f70cef8/car-skin-work.gif" data-mid="209918910" border="0"  src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/640/i/4d812a65894a6277019aad2f283edb3e0187f07dacd1ce5a45186df69f70cef8/car-skin-work.gif" /&#62;

Men (boy racers) are more than twice as likely to speed so perhaps the skin could have an automatic satefy feature that displays something distinctly un-boy racery when the car goes over the speeding limit?
	&#60;img width="640" height="474" width_o="640" height_o="474" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/1c538ce029baa4f0ea5fe06e69146a16dee6c7889b0b0766f347410b1a40b821/car-skin-boy-racer.gif" data-mid="209919263" border="0"  src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/640/i/1c538ce029baa4f0ea5fe06e69146a16dee6c7889b0b0766f347410b1a40b821/car-skin-boy-racer.gif" /&#62;

	Could the car make it easier to signal important information to other road users?
	&#60;img width="1218" height="914" width_o="1218" height_o="914" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/bdc3cbe096ae7b815977579d6598ea76c37985fc927fd167c43f03db363496c6/Screenshot-2024-04-29-at-09.28.35.png" data-mid="209918933" border="0"  src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/bdc3cbe096ae7b815977579d6598ea76c37985fc927fd167c43f03db363496c6/Screenshot-2024-04-29-at-09.28.35.png" /&#62;&#60;img width="1218" height="918" width_o="1218" height_o="918" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/66d12d47f259ae1e4dbba65a5bfbe834ad10b0b27b735385bf577b81f399fb64/Screenshot-2024-04-29-at-09.28.27.png" data-mid="209918932" border="0"  src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/66d12d47f259ae1e4dbba65a5bfbe834ad10b0b27b735385bf577b81f399fb64/Screenshot-2024-04-29-at-09.28.27.png" /&#62;

	Sticking with road safety, what if you could turn your entire car into a gigantic indicator?&#38;nbsp;
	&#60;img width="640" height="474" width_o="640" height_o="474" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/8f9528c7d23b121e9f2d8c6e6207f83b8eb62552cd128007b753dd7e35a6d98f/car-skin-indicatior.gif" data-mid="209919198" border="0"  src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/640/i/8f9528c7d23b121e9f2d8c6e6207f83b8eb62552cd128007b753dd7e35a6d98f/car-skin-indicatior.gif" /&#62;

	Or what if in emergencies you could turn your entire car into a MASSIVE flashing siren? (This would also be good for undercover cops springing into action).
	&#60;img width="640" height="474" width_o="640" height_o="474" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/8e0249cf57db2b7ae92e26462c35f4158e9e3c14e518faeb56046eb7074346c2/car-skin-siren.gif" data-mid="209919140" border="0"  src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/640/i/8e0249cf57db2b7ae92e26462c35f4158e9e3c14e518faeb56046eb7074346c2/car-skin-siren.gif" /&#62;

	Could there be a car pooling mode that signals your live route and destination to others?
	&#60;img width="1914" height="1438" width_o="1914" height_o="1438" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/074bf374dac6f2ec3e41a35e6a7bd9a8df702330446e8eb48d01b68fc0a9fd6a/Screenshot-2024-04-29-at-09.45.26.png" data-mid="209919278" border="0" data-scale="100" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/074bf374dac6f2ec3e41a35e6a7bd9a8df702330446e8eb48d01b68fc0a9fd6a/Screenshot-2024-04-29-at-09.45.26.png" /&#62;

	If a driver is parked illegally or driving like a bozo, could the car automatically display their licence?
	&#60;img width="1910" height="1442" width_o="1910" height_o="1442" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/3b4e4846371e5857eb278e1cb9190230d82894f0dbe50064d27cfe4b3bee93ca/Screenshot-2024-04-29-at-09.46.31.png" data-mid="209919283" border="0" data-scale="100" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/3b4e4846371e5857eb278e1cb9190230d82894f0dbe50064d27cfe4b3bee93ca/Screenshot-2024-04-29-at-09.46.31.png" /&#62;

Stage 01: London to Oxford

If you’ve ever wondered how far it is to Tipperary, I may have the book series for you. Created during lockdown, and using the 1912 hit tune It’s a Long Way To Tipperary as inspiration, this is an eight-part walking tour cobbled together from home using Google Maps and Wikipedia. Kicking off in London (home to both myself and the song’s fabled homesick Irishman), our tour heads west across England, Wales and the Irish Sea before plodding inland to our final destination, Tipperary in Ireland.

Walk to Oxford from your kitchen table

 All along the way we’ll stop off to learn about a whole host of unsung local histories — from the surreal and sombre to the sentimental, sexy and spooky.
The first stage, mapped out over 164 pages, travels from London to the university town of Oxford. Highlights en route include:Sex parties at The Hellfire ClubCilla Black’s haunted mansionThe shark of HeadingtonSpike Milligan’s beloved street lampsPeter the Wild Boy of HamburgThe unmarked grave of the father of body buildingThe SCANDALOUS&#38;nbsp;Profumo Affair

If this little journey sounds like your cup of tea it’d be great to have you along for the trip.

Fancy getting involved?Researching and writing the stories was a lot of fun. So far I’ve done stage 1 (London to Oxford) but there’s seven more to do. If you’d like to get involved in researching a stop-off or an entire stage, please get in touch and I’ll share the routes and some instructions. I’m interested in local folklore and speculative fiction too so any leads appreciated.&#38;nbsp;The overall stages are:1. London to Oxford&#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp;DONE2. Oxford to Gloucester3. Gloucester to Brecon4. Brecon to Carmarten5. Carmarten to Pembroke6. Pembroke to Rosslare7. Rosslare to Carrig On-Suir8. Carrig On-Suir to Tipperary

Irish tenor John McCormack’s celebrated rendition

Interesting nuggets:It’s A Long Way To Tipperary was MASSIVE when it came out and became an anthem for the British and Irish soliders fighting in World War 1. It was so popular that it was also taken up and translated by the German troops fighting from the opposite trenches. That’s mental.&#38;nbsp;Here’s a clip of German soliders singing it in the classic war film Das Boot.The actual town of Tipperary got fed up with being associated with war so set up The Tipperary International Peace Prize in 1983. Previous winners include Nelson Mandela, Malala Yousafzai and John Kerry. I love this kind of thinking.While tracing the route and reading articles on Wikipedia it was interesting to note how much of the history is about men. There’s not a whole lot of meaningful stuff about women. This is one reason I’m keen to invite others to get involved in researching other stop-offs and stages. Maybe our stop-offs can be speculative fiction too?&#38;nbsp;This project is dedicated to Charles Salter, aka The Geogria Rambler.&#38;nbsp;

		<description>
1 minute 18 seconds of pure Corporate Healing

Corporate Healing is a guided meditation built entirely from brand taglines and advertising slogans. You can begin your session right now at🧘‍♀️ www.corporate-healing.xyz 🧘‍♀️
Some background
A few years ago, while listening to the radio, I was struck by the nature and tone of the advertisements being broadcast. Although they were flogging vastly different products—life insurance, sports shoes, sugared drinks—each ad signed off with a tagline or slogan that felt closer to an inspirational quote than commercial offering: Be All You Can Be. Have It Your Way. Open Happiness. Inspire The Next.

&#60;img width="2004" height="968" width_o="2004" height_o="968" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/64c021f647d641806d6b5fc1d89fdb13a3d274411922448663001da91b289014/taglines.png" data-mid="96082514" border="0"  src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/64c021f647d641806d6b5fc1d89fdb13a3d274411922448663001da91b289014/taglines.png" /&#62;My growing library of taglines (or are they inspirational quotes?)
What felt especially jarring to me was how these taglines were delivered. Instead of communicating them in suitably airy and inspirational ways, voice actors delivered each line in a kind of frenzied, forceful way (something I assume was the result of having a tight time limit and no visual assets to lean on). Regardless, that particular ad break left me feeling rattled and confused — like a drill sargent had been shouting vaguely uplifting phrases into my face for 4 solid minutes. Wanting to play with this friction, I began collecting as many taglines and slogans as I could, looking for ways to play with their mixed messages and moods.

&#60;img width="858" height="520" width_o="858" height_o="520" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/83c4ea32008c464ce18b37b0ed24ae11022772c57c2e21ab9fe09119499a110e/Feb-17-2021-16-02-19.gif" data-mid="99206591" border="0"  src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/858/i/83c4ea32008c464ce18b37b0ed24ae11022772c57c2e21ab9fe09119499a110e/Feb-17-2021-16-02-19.gif" /&#62;
Corporate-Healing.xyz

That’s when I zenned my way towards the idea of reappropriating these taglines into a kind of guided meditiation. Hosted on a dedicated website, Corporate Healing&#38;nbsp;is led by Geriant, a computerised voice with a Welsh accent (he was the most mystical sounding computer voice I could find). Over a composition of dreamy ambient music, Geriant reads randomly from my growing library of global taglines. As a slight nod to John Carpenter’s 1988 sci-fi horror&#38;nbsp;They Live, I’ve set my tagline’s in a simple black typeface on a clean white background.&#38;nbsp;
Economics podcast, Freakamonics recently explored a study that suggested TV advertising has far less impact than we might assume. With this in mind as an experiment I think it would be very interesting to replace regular TV ad breaks — say on RTÉ, Channel 4, ITV, Sky, etc — with my more meditative version for a month or two. Who knows, in addition to improving viewers wellbeing, sales might also go up. If there are any TV types reading this, get in touch and let’s start the mass healing.
Nuggets:· Brands spend large amounts of money crafting these slogans, meaning Corporate Healing may well be the most expensive meditation ever assembled. Cha-ching!· Advertising (and purpose driven branding in general) does a precise job of understanding our&#38;nbsp; emotional needs. When these slogans are stripped of their visual contexts and experienced together in one communication like this, they all offer us the same thing really: to be MORE than we currently are. Maybe Corporate Healing is the communal voice of all our emotional needs and wants? Deep man.

Behold, the purest form of retail therapy

Large scale Corporate Healing? I’d someday love to stream Corporate Healing on a massive outdoor digital billboard. If you happen to have access to one, please let me know and we can embark on some mass healing. In the meantime if you have a large TV the site streams nicely using Chromecast.

From drop-down to drop-dead (sorry bad joke)&#38;nbsp;
Drop-down headstoneI’d like to propose a new system for headstones inspired by the drop-down menu you might encounter when filling out your date of birth online. On my new headstone every year a person lived is displayed, one on top of the other like a drop-down menu. The more years a person lived, the taller their headstone. Perfect for sleeping giants.

Eyre Square: Follow the yellow fingerDespite being one of Ireland's wettest and cloudiest locations, Galway is one of the country’s most vibrant and colourful destinations, hosting numerous festivals and cultural events every year. To celebrate this joyful outlook I would like to propose a new sculpture to be built in the city’s centre, Eyre Square, entitled Above The Clouds The Sun Is Always Shining.

&#60;img width="900" height="636" width_o="900" height_o="636" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/c3d173d1935e5954b4c445ca0793ba83c8bee13796e93fd2f62bcba1fc6e0993/galway---small.gif" data-mid="85010179" border="0"  src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/900/i/c3d173d1935e5954b4c445ca0793ba83c8bee13796e93fd2f62bcba1fc6e0993/galway---small.gif" /&#62;It’s Up There: A moving sculpture that always points to the sun
Taking its name from a slightly cheesy but nonetheless factually accurate inspirational quote: “Above The Clouds The Sun Is Always Shining“, the sculpture will feature an oversize robotic hand that, even on the most overcast of days, points to the sun’s live position high above the clouds. Like a magical moving statue, of which Ireland has a&#38;nbsp;history, the sunshine-yellow emoji hand will be built using a modified robotic arm (see below), set to continuously track the star’s positional data as the day progresses.

&#60;img width="2389" height="1600" width_o="2389" height_o="1600" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/6d4b4df20b4eb180cd8870eecfe99d044b4b08ef19e097b62e2d9edde819b1e6/robot-data.jpg" data-mid="84907297" border="0" alt="A robotic arm, used but in good condition, currently available for &#38;pound;15,000 on eBay." data-caption="A robotic arm, used but in good condition, currently available for £15,000 on eBay." src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/6d4b4df20b4eb180cd8870eecfe99d044b4b08ef19e097b62e2d9edde819b1e6/robot-data.jpg" /&#62;
Left: An M2004 robotic arm, used but in good condition, currently available for £15,000 on eBay. Right: TheSkyLive.com offers a live data feed of the sun’s position.

On dark, wet days, the sculpture will act as a not-so-subtle reminder that the sun is still up there, shining brilliantly above the clouds. Then on sunny days, when the sky is clear of clouds, the sculpture will simply point up becoming a temporary sundial. It could also use this time to charge up using built-in solar panels (I’ve thought everything through here).

If you work in Galway City council, have access to £15,000 (€16,523) and think Above The Clouds The Sun Is Always Shining could be an upbeat addition to the square, please do not hesitate in contacting me. For the purposes of these mock ups I have used the plinth that the Galway Hookers Monument currently sits upon. It would not be my intention to replace this. Just in case this works against my proposal. Thank you.

🤓
Some interesting things I learned during this project:

Cloud amounts are measured in ‘okta’, which is the amount of eights of the sky covered.

Irish skies are completely covered by cloud for well over fifty percent of the time.
Irish skies are least cloudy at night. On average minimum cloud cover is between 2100 and 0100 GMT while maximum cover is between 1000 and 1500 GMT. Bad for sun bathing but good for star gazing I guess
My sculpture was part-inspired by Linda Brunker’s excellent “Wishing Hand” sculpture that sits outside the Department of Education in Dublin:

Davy Byrne's Pub, Dublin, from the Bailey

Unmuted Paintings — I had a go at imagining what some of my favourite paintings in the National Gallery Of Ireland might sound like. Pictured above is ’Davy Byrne's Pub, Dublin, from the Bailey’ by Harry Aaron Kernoff. It was painted in 1941 so in amongst the other pub sounds I’ve included a popular song from the charts that year: We Three by The Ink Spots.

The Opening of the Sixth Seal

This second attempt imagines what ‘The Opening of the Sixth Seal’ by Francis Danby might sound like (what a painting btw! Go full screen!). Again located in the National Gallery Of Ireland, this painting was done in 1871 and “…illustrates a section from the Book of Revelations (6:12-17), in which, on the opening by God of the sixth seal on a scroll, the earth is rent and mankind descends into disarray. The sun becomes black and the heavens collapse; a king slumps among now worthless symbols of his sovereignty (crown and sceptre), people cower in fear of the wrath of God, and a city falls to rubble in the background.” That’s nice isn’t it?.

Funny Business — Part joke book, part Turing Test, Funny Business is a collection of interactions I had with the customer service departments of global brands. In a world where more jobs are being automated, I wanted to find out whether I was talking to a human or bot by telling each recipient a (terrible) joke I’d made up via the live chat feature.

What started off as a playful idea intended to brighten up an employee or bot’s day, soon evolved into a series of loose observations about out-sourced labour and corporate culture.

To present my findings I scooped screengrabs of each chat session up and self-published them as a book called Funny Business. I had an introduction written by someone smarter than me and on legal advice redacted all the brand and employee names.

Here’s one of my favourite jokes from the book:

Q. What Manchester United legend is best at pottery? (Answer at bottom of the page)I spoke to It’s Nice That and Totally Dublin about the book.
